Project Details:
'Rhythm Skate' is an arcade-friendly, alternative controller game where the player controls the in-game assets by standing and balancing their body back and forth on top of skateboard, hooked up to an Arduino gyroscope and accelerometer, to catch music beats in each lane. |
My Contributions:
• Collaborated with team members in concepting and designing gameplay and mechanics • Programmed the in-game skateboard movements, controls and rhythm game function • Worked on the software side in Unity to connect to the Arduino hardware using Ardity • Assembled physical skateboard with Arduino and wooden planks to work as a controller • Designed UI layout and several art assets (feedback when hitting or missing a beat) • Designed, modeled and 3D printed button holder for better accommodations • Managed playtests and iterated prototype designs based on feedback Team: Ruoqing Gan, Yi Qing Khoo (Haru), Kendra Shu |
There are three lanes where the “beats” fall and the player must tilt the skateboard left and right to indicate where to go. To “hit” or catch the beat, the player must hit a button at the right time while they are in the correct lane. For our midterm prototype, we used the breadboard as the control where the player can physically pick it up and move with their hands.
In this final version, players are able to stand on a physical board and lean back and forth to control the in-game skateboard sprite. Players press an arcade sized button on time to catch falling beats. We 3D printed a button holder so players can physically hold the button with one hand, an improved design from a previous prototype. |
